The Missoula Fire Department is an all paid/career department. The Operations Division staffs five stations 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. Each station houses an engine company staffed by a minimum of three firefighters (a captain, an engineer and a tailboard firefighter). Stations No. 3 and No. 4 also house one cross-staffed ladder truck each. Total call volume was approxiamately 9000 for 2018.

The Missoula Fire Department dispatches three engine companies, a truck company, and a Battalion Chief to all structure fires in the city limits. MFD also dispatches a fire engine to all medical aids dispatched through 911.

Operations personnel are assigned to four separate battalions (A, B, C, D). Each battalion or shift is commanded by a Battalion Chief.

Missoula Fire Department works a 42 hour work week, which consists of 1 24 hour shift on, 1 24 hour shift off, 1 24 hour shift on, followed by five days off. This is an 8 day work cycle.
